ESDU release review of high lift device Data Items

ESDU's new Data Item (97002) provides an introductory review of all the Items in the Aerodynamics Sub-series which deal with changes in the lift, pitching moment and drag of a two-dimensional aerofoil or a wing due to the deployment of high-lift devices.

In general the effects of high-lift devices are represented by increments in those quantities caused by a given device deflection. The methods explained in the Data Items are largely empirical, and are based on extensive wind-tunnel data.

Most Items contain an Accuracy and Applicability Section that discusses the reliability of the prediction methods. This should be consulted when any individual Item is used.

In the absence of any explicit statement, comparisons of incremental experimental and predicted values suggest that the errors involved in the use of the methods will not exceed plus or minus 10 per cent in most cases. All the Items reviewed contain one or more worked examples.
