CityFlyer Express has recruited its first four engineering apprentices (Plate 8). Aged between l 7 and 19, the four start work with the London Gatwick-based airline after successfully completing their first year of study. They have begun studying for their European JAR 66 licence at Northbrook College, Shoreham. This qualification succeeds the former LWTR certificate, and within five years they will achieve their type licences.

"The training of these four apprentices represents a significant investment for us", said CityFlyer engineering director Steve Hodgkiss. "They will be licensed engineers within three years and by investing in these young people, we are investing in our future." He acknowledged that with an increasing shortage of engineers in the industry, CityFlyer was pleased to be shaping a future for them. Furthermore, the independently-owned airline plans to take on more apprentices over the next four years and grow its now 95-strong engineering team as its aircraft fleet and route network strengthen. With this continuing growth, CityFlyer will be inaugurating a new aircraft hangar at London Gatwick Airport, scheduled for completion at the end of November this year.
