Ferranti Technologies Limited (FTL) has completed production and delivery of the first units in a multi-million pound order for SAHIS (Standby Attitude and Heading Indicator System) for use in the RAF's Harrier GR7 and TMk10 aircraft.

The SAHIS order, which involved design and development as well as production, was placed by BAe Military Aircraft and Aerostructures in 1996 to meet the RAF's need for a robust, cost-effective back-up attitude and heading system for use in the event of failure of the aircraft's primary system. RAF pilots will benefit from the immediate and reliable aircraft attitude and orientation data, and be able to choose from the options for the ongoing management of the aircraft, continuation of the mission in hand or disengagement.

The system comprises a gyro unit sensor assembly which provides the signals to drive the pilot's indicator. The gyro unit contains an FTL accelerometer, vertical gyroscope and directional gyroscope, the performance of which is enhanced by an electronics computing unit.
