British Aerospace announced the following senior appointments:

Professor Dave Gardner is appointed engineering director at a time of important developments in the company's evolution and positioning in the European aerospace and defence industry.

Engineering's role continues to be central to BAe's success now and in the future and, consequently, Professor Gardner will sit on the company's executive committee.

Professor Gardner, who is currently deputy managing director of BAe's Military Aircraft and Aerostructures business unit and industrial professor to Loughborough University, joined the company in 1959 as an apprentice.

Peter Anstiss, who is currently sales and marketing support director for Military Aircraft and Aerostructures, takes up the appointment of chief executive of British Aerospace Australia from November 1.

He will build on BAe's considerable successes, which include the Hawk Lead-in Fighter programme, and will hold responsibility for all of British Aerospace Australia's operations and BAe plc's marketing activities in the region.

Peter has been actively involved in the development of new business in markets across the world and is currently a member of the Military Aircraft & Aerostructures management committee.

Roger Hawksworth is to take up the key new senior appointment of group director and chief of staff to assist British Aerospace's strategic development.

Currently deputy chief executive of the Matra BAe Dynamics joint venture, he will be responsible for establishing a secretariat to support British Aerospace's senior decision-making committees.

He will work closely with chief executive John Weston and other directors to ensure the company's decision-making processes are more effective and efficient.

Roger has held the posts of strategy director at Military Aircraft & Aerostructures and strategy director for BAe's defence company. He played a key role in the complex negotiations which led to the formation of the Matra BAe Dynamics joint venture in 1996 the first cross-country joint venture of that size.

Alan Garwood, currently managing director for Europe in the company's International Marketing and Sales Organisation, will replace Roger as deputy chief executive of Matra BAe Dynamics.

Most recently he has been highly successful leading BAe marketing campaigns in Europe and North America. However, Alan has spent most of his career in the missile sector. He was head of procurement for British Aerospace Dynamics before working on extensive European collaboration negotiations. He became Dynamics' vice-president sales and business development and joined the board as sales and customer support director before joining IMSO in 1996.

Simon Keith, who joined BAe two years ago from a successful period with GEC in senior regional marketing roles, will succeed Alan Garwood as managing director for Europe.

Simon has played a significant role in the company's European marketing team over the past two years.
