ESDU Data Item helps predict aero engine noise

Keywords ESDU, Noise measurement

ESDU International's latest aerospace engineering Data Item (98008) permits the user to estimate noise generated by fans or compressors in turbojet and turbofan engines with and without inlet guide vanes.

The new Data Item can be used to calculate sound pressure levels in one-third octave bands in the frequency range of 50Hz to 10,000Hz for lossless free-field ambient conditions.

To do so, the main parameters that need to be specified are the mass flow rate, the total temperature rise across a fan stage, the design point and the operating point values of the rotor tip relative inlet Mach number and certain data about the fan geometry.

The computer program that accompanies the new Data Item is known as ESDUpac A98008 and is written in FORTRAN 77.

ESDU International, an IHS Group Company, produces and updates comprehensive validated engineering data and related engineering procedures covering the aerospace, mechanical, chemical and structural engineering sectors.

They are used by engineers in many of the world's largest industrial engineering groups to help optimise their product designs and represent a unique and invaluable engineering resource.
