Aerosystems International (Ael) has been awarded a prime contract valued in excess of £4.5 million by the Ministry of Defence Procurement Executive to supply a Link 11 Data Link systems for the Royal Air Force's Nimrod MR Mk2 aircraft.
Ael has been contracted to install the Link 11 system on ten of the current MR2 fleet and will also be supplying a spares, maintenance and comprehensive training package.
First aircraft delivery is due in early 1999, with the remainder of the ten aircraft being installed at a rate of two a month thereafter.
Link 11 will provide a secure information system between the Nimrod aircraft and other operational units on the network, with both transmit and receive capability. The system will use Ael's established Link 11 software product running on commercial off the shelf (COTS) processor and display system. Communication will be by HF radio and Data Terminal Set. Rig and Ground testing will utilise Ael's versatile Data Link Ground Station (DLGS).
As Prime Contractor Ael will be responsible for the complete system including the message processing, the data terminal set and the radios, aircraft installation, trials, approval and support. Ael's key partners are:
- •
Telephonics (Communications and Systems Division) responsible for the communications system including radios and data terminal sets. The system chosen is common to the communications system for the Nimrod MRA Mk4.
- •
British Aerospace (Military Aerospace and Aerostructures) responsible for the aircraft installation and the Design Authority approval.
- •
DERA Boscombe Down responsible for the Military Aircraft Release recommendation.
