Aerostructures Hamble, a designer and manufacturer of aircraft structures and components has installed an EFCO drop bottom rapid quench type solution heat treatment installation at its works at Hamble le Rice.

Supplied as a fully installed turnkey project, the installation comprised a drop bottom electrically heated oven, mobile polymer quench tank with cooling, static water rinse tank, overhead crane, work baskets and micro-processor controlled control system.

The new installation replaced a Salt Bath unit and will be used to heat treat a wide range of airframe and other sections which are manufactured from alloys of aluminium, steel and titanium.

The plant has a work basket size of 5,000mm × 1,000mm × 1,950mm and is designed to perform heat treatments within the range of 150°C to 550°C. The oven conforms to all current aerospace specifications for temperature uniformity and recovery, in addition to quench times better than seven seconds.
