Mektron Systems Limited has launched a complete range of high performance VME and VME 64 Extensions backplanes that have been designed specifically for ruggedised military COTS as well as for use with any commercial application. It is believed that these Millennium backplanes are industry's first and only COTS VME backplane family designed primarily for military applications. They claim to offer outstanding quality, versatility and cost effectiveness for any VME project (see Plate 4).

A comprehensive range of different slot width backplanes from 1- through 20-slot are available that incorporates the same ten-layer controlled impedance motherboard throughout and offers optimum configuration flexibility. Irrespective of VME bus format, be it standard VME, VME 64 Extensions, or a mixed configuration of both, the sophisticated design enables these backplanes to be manufactured from the same base board and then allows them to be configured to customer requirements at the assembly stage.

The advanced design of these backplanes also enables any environmental build level, from full ruggedised Military MIL-Spec to commercial industrial standard, all from the same bare boards that are released to MIL-P-55110 and are populated from stock. This combined approach offers optimum configurational flexibility and significantly reduced lead times, whilst ensuring cost competitiveness.

Utilising industry proven and established Pressfit connector technology, the Mektron Millennium backplanes can be populated with any permutation of 3-row or 5-row Jl/J2 or "A"/"B" style PO connectors. Ruggedised build level backplanes use high specification components and are conformally coated. For high quality and reliability the commercial build level backplanes are also fitted with high specification components.

The complete range is available with automatic Bus Grant and IACK switching options.

All VME 64 Extension backplanes, as well as all ruggedised Military COTS versions, are fitted with vertical stiffener bars that greatly alleviate the higher insertion/extraction forces associated with the high density two-part connectors and provide added rigidity. The advanced design also allows these vertical stiffener bars to be utilised for enhanced power distribution.

The Millennium Series of rugged backplanes is designed to exceed the specification requirements of MIL-STD-810E with operating temperature of ­55oC to +105oC, and ability to withstand shock to 40g for 11ms and vibration to O. 1gg/Hz (12g RMS approx). These backplanes are specifically targeted for military applications including airborne (ATR), seagoing and land mobile (Vehtronics) as well as any benign and industrial applications.
