Elektron RZ5 & WE43

Keywords Alloys, Elektron, Magnesium

Elektron RZ5 is stated to be a well proven magnesium casting alloy containing zinc, rare earths and zirconium. Used in the T5 condition, this high strength magnesium alloy considered ideal for high integrity castings operations at ambient temperatures or up to 150oC. Magnesium Elektron Ltd (MEL) state that in addition to displaying excellent casting characteristics, the alloy is both pressure tight, weldable and will contain minimal microporosity; in addition the tendency to hot cracking is said to be low.

Castings of Elektron RZ5, like all magnesium alloy castings, claim faster machining times than other metals. Providing the geometry of the part allows, the limiting factor being the power and speed of the machine rather than quality, of the tool material. The power required per cubic centimetre of metal removed varies from 9-14 watts per minute depending on operation.

Aerospace applications include helicopter gearboxes, aircraft engines and aircraft components.

Elektron WE43, like R7-5, is stated to be a high strength magnesium based casting alloy for use at temperatures up to 300oC. This alloy system is reported to maintain its good mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, without the use of silver or thorium. It is also stated to be stable for long term exposure up to 250oC.

As with RZ5, it claims faster qualified machining times, In WE43's case, the power per cubic centimetre of metal removed varies from 9-14 watts per minute, depending on operation.

MEL consider that the alloy's retention of properties at elevated temperatures will be of interest to designers of aeroengines and helicopter transmissions.

Both alloys claim good corrosion resistance. All normal chromating, anodising and finishing treatments are applicable to RZ5. Normal protective treatments apply for WE43 but some chromating baths may be need to be modified for the satisfactory treatment of castings.
