SolidWorks Corporation announced XchangeWorks, a new data exchange plug-in that enables engineers to import solid modeling CAD data directly into AutoCAD and Mechanical Desktop. XchangeWorks is said to integrate seamlessly with existing AutoCAD and Mechanical Desktop mechanical design environments, allowing for direct translation of part files created with many CAD products such as SolidWorks, Pro/ENGINEER, and Unigraphics.

Previously, users who needed to import solid modeling data into AutoCAD or Mechanical Desktop had to export the data into a neutral file format first, adding an extra step. Using the XchangeWorks plug-in, designers and engineers can reportedly import part files directly, saving time and virtually eliminating the need to go through neutral file formats. From pull-down menus in AutoCAD or Mechanical Desktop, users can access data translation capabilities across a variety of file formats, including IGES, STEP, VDAFS, SolidWorks, Pro/ENGINEER, and Unigraphics.

John McEleney, vice president of product marketing for SolidWorks said:

SolidWorks is the first company to deliver an AutoCAD plug-in to import native CAD data. Many AutoCAD users are looking to move to 3D solid modeling but need to share 3D information today. XchangeWorks was developed to enable engineers to bring solid modeling part files directly into AutoCAD or Mechanical Desktop using the Autodesk ARX interface. SolidWorks continues to develop and deliver technology that provides superior data sharing tools to the CAD market. We are committed to providing engineers with the best, most affordable engineering tools on the market to make their jobs easier, so they can get work done faster, making them more productive and competitive.

XchangeWorks is compatible with AutoCAD Rl4.x; AutoCAD Mechanical R14.5; or Mechanical Desktop 2.x or 3.x. System requirements include:

  • Microsoft Windows NT or Windows 95;

  • Pentium-based computer;

  • CD-ROM drive.
