Dunlop Aviation has been specified as the supplier of nosewheels for the new Airbus A340 variants, the A340-500 (313 passengers) and A340-600 (380 passengers), which are planned to enter service in 2002 (Plate 6). To date nine launch customers have placed orders for 120 of the new aircraft.

John Whelan, director and general manager of Dunlop Aviation Braking Systems, commented, "This is the first order which we have obtained from Airbus Industrie and is a direct result of the company's expanded design and manufacturing facilities which has enabled us to seek work from new customers. In addition, we have recently opened an office in Toulouse to improve interface with European manufacturers, particularly Airbus, ATR and British Aerospace."

Two 432mm (17in.) rim diameter aluminium wheels equip each aircraft, and delivery to the plant at Toulouse begins in October 2000. Dunlop Aviation is a member of the Dunlop Standard Aerospace Group, which specialises in the design and manufacture of aircraft wheels, brakes and braking systems. The company also produces electro-thermal aircraft ice protection, electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment and composite structures.
