TÛV Product Service has upgraded its lightning simulation test facility at Fareham in Hampshire (Plate 1). As a result, the company believes its lightning test capability to be among the most comprehensive in the world and unique in the UK.

A major investment in the Thomson-CSF MLS 5000 Transient Generator System gives TÛV Product Service the benefit of a new modular concept which allows the test facility the flexibility to keep pace with constantly changing test specifications. With all test waveforms and functions software controlled, the MLS 5000 can generate high energy waveforms to 20kV and 10kA, as single- or multiple-stroke in either double exponential pulse or damped sine format. The outputs can withstand any type of load, from short to open circuit. The total number of pulses and interval between pulses is fully controllable, and the equipment can be configured for direct, ground or transformer coupled injection.
By extending its transient generation capability, TÛV Product Service can now test for conformance with RTCA DO-16OC/D for Cable Bundles at most waveforms and levels; RTCA DO-16OC/D for Pin Injection waveforms 3 and 4, levels 1 to 5; Def Stan 59-41 Part 3, DCS04, DCS05 and DCS09 (short and intermediate waveforms); Mil Std 461D, CS116; and EFA Specification SPE-J-000-E-1000, LEMP-EFA-2.
This new transient generation facility complements TÛV Product Service's comprehensive capability for testing to virtually all military and civil aerospace environmental and EMC specifications. TÛV Product Service's highly trained and experienced engineers can provide an effective advisory service in design for compliancy, and in the generation of test plans which may be a contractual requirement for defence and aerospace projects.
