£1 million order boost for Darchem

Keyword: Darchem Honeycomb Products

Darchem Honeycomb Products reports that it has won two new contracts to reinforce its position in the field of design, manufacture and installation of flow straighteners for wind tunnels.

The latest contracts - from Switzerland and Malaysia - mean that Darchem is presently working on five wind tunnels under orders worth £1 million in total. The others are for continental Europe and North America and involve customers in the automotive and aerospace industries.

Work has already started and should be completed by the summer. The company reports that its strengths in this market include being able to provide homogeneous (without frames) flow straighteners, which avoid flow distortions and give higher accuracy measurements. This in turn improves the results achieved by the wind tunnel operator.

The largest of the current contracts calls for a flow straightener of about ten metres square, manufactured from stainless steel measuring 24mm cell size and 1.25 metres deep. The smallest order, which is about six metres square, is again made of stainless steel with a cell size of 9.5mm and 150mm depth.

In each case, the combination of cell size, overall geometry and cell angularity make the requirements of these flow straighteners amongst the most sophisticated ever constructed, said Philip Vaughan, who won the orders.
