It is reported that the US state of Kansas has been voted the number one location for UK logistics companies in the year 2000, by the Institute of Transport Management. The accreditation for being the most progressive US state for logistics investment has been summed up with the title: "Best US economic development region 2000".

At a special reception at the Royal Aeronautical Society, Brenda Drumm, general manager of the Institute of Transport, presented the award to the Lt-Governor of Kansas. Brenda Drumm has revealed that the Awards Committee was unanimous in its choice of Kansas: "After a rigorous two-year research and selection process, it was clear that Kansas really stood out from the crowd. The state provides a complete logistics infrastructure solution to meet the demand of today's transport and distribution industry."

Gary Sherrer, the Lieutenant-Governor of Kansas, expressed his delight at the accolade: "We have worked hard over the past two years to strengthen our relationships in the UK and we are honoured to be recognised as the best location for UK companies from a logistical and distribution stand-point. Kansas has a great deal to offer and we look forward to building additional partnerships."

Aerospace Systems & Technologies, an international aviation company based in Durham, is quoted as one of the companies to have recently relocated some of its manufacturing activities to Kansas, in the USA.

The company, a division of AS&T Ltd, produces ice protection systems for aircraft such as Raytheon, the Beech Bonanza, Cessna 206 and 210, Mooney and Trinidad. There is already a small facility at Lawrence, in Kansas, but the expanding company now needs larger premises, and is moving to Salina, close to its major customers in Wichita.
