DDC also reports that its new BU-65142 databus device (Plate 5) is aimed at the space market and offers a direct interface to the host system, obviating the need for a microprocessor and associated software. This feature is thought to be particularly important in space systems which require a low component count and software overhead.

The BU-65142 is a dual-redundant remote terminal compatible with the MIL-STD-1553 two-wire databus which, although widely used in avionic systems, is increasingly being used in space applications. The circuit offers a very high level of integration in a package measuring only 48.3mm x 53.3mm and is said to be radiation tolerant to a high total dose level and immune to latch-up. It includes dual low power transceivers and a complete RT protocol.

Data are transferred to and from the subsystem host memory over a 16-bit parallel highway which is isolated by a set of bidirectional buffers. All transfers are made with a DMA type handshake sequence of request, grant and acknowledge.

Error detection and recovery of the BU-65142 are said to be enhanced by a number of special features including a 14-bit built-in test word register which stores RTU information and sends it to the bus controller in response to the mode command transmit bit word. The circuit also performs continuous online wrap-around self-test, and provides four error flags to the host subsystem.

The BU-65142 is contained in a hermetically sealed 78-pin ceramic flat pack and has a –55°C to +125°C operating temperature range. It is powered by a +5 volt rail and the option of either –12 or –15 volts supplies, and can be supplied with full high reliability screening.
