Exceptionally realistic prototypes of thin-walled flexible parts can reportedly be achieved with a range of vacuum-casting resins from MCP Equipment.

For use in MCP vacuum-casting machines, the 81 series is described as containing six two-part resins with high tear strengths (from 21 to 37N/mm2) and good elongation characteristics (from 400 to 950 per cent break). Some grades are also translucent and amenable to pigmentation with any RAL or Pantone colour, or any other.

According to MCP, these properties enable soft PVC, TPR, TPE, PUR and nitrile components such as seals and gaiters to be prototyped in a form very close to end-products for strength, flexibility and looks.

In the vacuum-cast state, the resins have Shore A hardnesses from 35 to 90 and tensile strengths from 9.5 to 12N/mm2. shrinkage on curing is stated to be negligible at 0.1 to 0.3 per cent.
