Bellhouse Hartwell, an aircraft fabrications and component manufacturing company, has won joint first place in the UK's North West Business Excellence Awards for the year 2000.

Sponsored by Excellence North West, an organisation funded by industry, the award is offered annually to those demonstrating the most progress to achieve very high levels of continual improvement throughout all functions in the company. Organisations from all business sectors are eligible to compete and this year 17 entries were made. Bellhouse Hartwell, a Hampson Industries plc subsidiary, has entered only once before, winning a "Highly Commended" in 1999.

The top award of an engraved glass ornament was presented at a ceremony held recently in Manchester by Philip Smith, business development director of Cisco Systems, to Mark Abbey, the Bellhouse Group managing director, and Simon Dootson, the company's Westhoughton site operations manager.

The company's submission took six months to prepare by the "Business Excellence Team" and took the form of a 50-page document detailing the continuous improvements to the many operating systems throughout the organisation. With the final aim to gain recognition as a "world-class" manufacturer, Bellhouse has made notable improvements over the last five years, not only within the company, but also in relationships with the local community.
