The Welsh Development Agency is working with the UK's Defence Aviation Repair Agency (DARA), the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Cardiff International Airport operator TBI to study the possibility of transferring DARA's aero engineering business from its present site at RAF St Athan to a new complex close to Cardiff Airport.

DARA is currently undertaking a nationwide review of all its facilities and sites to ensure that it can compete effectively and successfully in a wider commercial marketplace. The company's present facilities at St Athan repair, maintain and upgrade aircraft such as the Tornado, Hawk, Jaguar and VC10.

The WDA is about to appoint specialist advisers to assess the feasibility of the move, which would ensure the retention of more than 2,000 highly skilled jobs in the region. The move would also create an opportunity to develop a major aviation industry "Centre of excellence" around the Airport.
