He co-founded Admiral in 1979, which became a major company in providing computer solutions for business. Admiral merged with CMG in June 2000. Between 1993 and July 2000 Clay was an advisor to the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and the Parliamentary Secretary, Office of Public Services, on their Next Steps agencies. He is a member of the Open University Business School's Industrial and Professional Advisory Committee where, in August 2001, he took up an appointment as a member of the Open University Council.

He joined Lucas Industries in 1986 and undertook technology, marketing and latterly strategic planning roles, culminating in the merger with Varity in 1996, when he moved to GEC, to take responsibility for strategic planning, technology and IT.

Her previous roles have included deputy under secretary in the Cabinet Office and chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee, acting as adviser to the Prime Minister on all foreign, defence and intelligence issues. She has also gained considerable experience in the private sector, working as managing director and head of Global Business Strategy in NatWest Marketing and, most recently, as executive vice-chairman of the corporate advisory house Hawkpoint Partners Limited. Dame Pauline is currently a BBC Governor, with special responsibility for the World Service and a member of the Development Committee of the Royal National Institute for the Blind.

Jon Symonds was a partner with KPMG, leading its chemical and pharmaceutical industry practice in the UK before joining Zeneca as finance director in 1997. When the company merged with Astra of Sweden in April 1999 he became an executive director and chief financial officer. AstraZeneca is a global life science group. Jon is responsible for all aspects of finance, including financial strategy and corporate finance, and also the global information services and investor relations for AstroZeneca, which is acknowledged as one of the top five pharmaceutical companies in the world. The new appointees will join existing board members: Sir John Egan (chairman), Sir John Chisholm (CEO), Graham Love (CFO) and Liz Peace (corporate affairs director). Terence Jagger and Colin Balmer will sit on the Board as MOD observers.
