Muirhoad Avionics recently launched a number of new products, these included; digital test sets; and survival radio transceivers. Muirhead Avionics is part of Auxitrol Muirhead Aerospace, a specialist aerospace company which also designs and manufactures electromechanical servocomponents, providing highly-accurate, reliable signals of angular & linear position, velocity, direction and displacement (Plates 10 and 11).

The AN/PRC-1 12 is thought to be one of the only transceivers to provide voice and covert transponder identification; as well as navigational/ information. It is said to be designed to withstand the most extreme missions, and can also perform beacon and air-to-ground voice support. It is the tri- service replacement for the AN/PRC-90 series.

Its uses will include: precise location of downed air crews; tracking of combat patrols; ground-to-ground communications for inner patrol command; locating forward controllers; MedEvac; combat resupply; all- weather approach to zones; and air-to-ground communications links.

Muirhead Avionics' new-generation digital ramp & bench Nav/Comm & XPDR systems test sets have been designed to offer the following functions: A, C, S, DME & TCAS modes; Nan/Comm Cat III Comms þ HF; and Military 1,2,3A/C/S, 4, IFF, TACAN/ DME & TCAS modes.

Muirhead Motion Technology, another company within the group, has also announced its latest developments in high- performance motion technology products: a hybrid stepper motor and an in-flight refuelling probe actuator. and

The new two-phase hybrid stepper motor is used in missile decoy systems. The motor positions a mirror, in azimuth and elevation, which reflects RF radiation generated within the decoy, towards an incoming missile. The unit is designed for maximum output torque per unit volume, in order to achieve high agility for the RF reflector.

The new in-flight refuelling probe actuator has been designed in direct response to specific customer requirements for an actuator to provide accurate rotary motion to extend and retract an air refuelling probe. It can be retrofitted, enabling in-flight refuelling. The unit reportedly meets stringent military specifications, including: high power; highly-accurate position sensing; and fuel resistance.

Auxitrol Muirhead Aerospace is part of the Auitrol Business Group which offers a full range of pressure and temperature sensors, fluid control devices and manifolds.

The company is approved to BS EN ISO 9001. It also holds approvals from the British Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and meets USA Federal Airworthiness Requirements (FAR); and is a contractor to the British Ministry of Defence.
