Bolsan Company Inc., of Pittsburgh PA, USA, has won a laminated sheet order from Boeing Commercial Airplanes of Wichita, KS and Seattle, WA. Bolsan, a member of Hampson Aerospace Special Products Division, it will deliver laminated Type I A aluminium, a product that meets improved quality standards to Boeing specifications for the manufacture of laminated sheets. Boeing Wichita will convert the material into shims and spacers used to close very small gaps between complex fabricated parts.
Each sheet of aluminium comprises a number of glued layers as thin as 0.05 mm. Once a shim is manufactured from the sheet, workers at Boeing Wichita can make fine adjustments to the fitting by peeling away a layer at a time until the shim is the exact thickness required.
