30 year partnership with Westland Helicopters Ltd

Keywords: Sensors, Helicopters

Schaevitz Sensors, a division of Measurement Specialties Inc, is celebrating almost 30 years working with Westland Helicopters Ltd, an AgustaWestland company, with the introduction of a new, custom-built pressure transducer to be fitted to the new Super Lynx 300. Three P700 series sensors have been specified to monitor pressure within the helicopter's hydraulic systems.

Schaevitz has been working with Westland since 1972, providing P700 series sensors for the original Lynx. These have performed successfully for almost 30 years. However, the decision to re-engine the new Super Lynx 300, replacing the Rolls Royce GEM engines with more powerful units made it necessary to upgrade the existing sensors to meet the greater EMC requirements of the new engine.

Working with engineers from Westland Helicopters Ltd, Schaevitz personnel designed a new unit to meet the specification which required pressure sensors able to withstand the more demanding environment found within the transmission bay of the Super Lynx.

Built to order, the new sensors perform a similar function to the original P700 series units supplied for previous Lynx aircraft, providing information on hydraulic system pressures. However, very much greater EMC (Electro Magnetic Compatibility) and a higher level of RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) protection have been built in to cope with the demands of the more powerful LHTEC CTS800-4N engine fitted to the Super Lynx 300.

Three sensors will be fitted to each Super Lynx 300. Testing being completed the new pressure sensors were, we are informed, Flight Qualified at the end of September last.

Schaevitz Sensors has been working with Westland Helicopters Ltd since 1972, when it secured the contract to supply pressure transducers in a competitive tender. All sensors for Westland Helicopters Ltd are custom-built for the company and have been fitted to every Lynx helicopter, both for the UK market and export.
