USF launches safe alternative to harmful cleaning solvents
Keywords: Solvents, Cleaning, Environment
Following a recent European agreement, the environmental classification for trichloroethylene based solvents is to be upgraded to a Category 2 carcinogen. As a result, The Health & Safety Executive is urging those who use these chemicals for cleaning and degreasing to prepare for tighter controls affecting their use and disposal (Plate 5).
Manufacturer of aqueous cleaning equipment, USF Surface Preparation has therefore launched the AquaTec range of cleaning and degreasing solutions – a genuine alternative to solvent cleaners.
This range of what is considered to be effective and environmentally friendly, water based solutions is reportedly powerful enough to cope with most industrial degreasing operations. Each offers multi-metal cleaning abilities and can be safely used in spray, dip and ultrasonic wash applications.

The range comprises four solutions ranging from: AquaTec LD, a light duty product said to be suitable for use on all metal types and no-rinse situations; through to AquaTec HD, described as a non-toxic heavy duty, oil-splitting degreaser for removing stubborn deposits of dirt, grease and grime in heavy engineering environments. A low vapour emulsifying solution with a built-in short term rust inhibition system completes the range.
To support this launch USF Surface Preparation has produced two fact sheets: "Why Change from Solvent to Aqueous Cleaning?" and "Guidelines for ensuring consistent performance from your Aqueous degreasing Solutions."
Available in 20 litre polydrums, AquaTec aqueous cleaning solutions are claimed to be ideal for those looking to remove hazardous solvents from their operation.
