New concept large capacity non-contact measuring machine

Keywords: Metrology, Measurement, Machines

Meeting the demand for high-specification, cost-efficient non-contact measurement, the UK launch of the MicrVu Excel range of measuring centres has been announced by Metrology Direct. The Excel range offers measuring capacities up to 1500 x 1200 x 150mm and supplements the existing Vertex, Vector and Matrix series (Plate 4).

The new Excel machines, available from measurement specialists Metrology Direct, claim moving gantry vision systems, for high speed and high accuracy. The lightweight system can reportedly accommodate large parts and fixtures while maintaining a relatively small footprint.

With XY speeds of 500mm/s and acceleration up to 1000mm/s2, the machines are said to be extremely efficient and flexible. Accuracy on the 4,120 and 4,220 models is 3.5+L/300 µ for XY with 3.5µ repeatability. Movement is through a monorail system for X and Y axes which is said to reduce drive friction and minimises maintenance and downtime.

According to Metrology Direct advanced lighting, zoom control and edge detection tools mean the Excel series can handle the most demanding of applications with speed and accuracy. The standard ring light offers controls for two separate rings and 16 segments whilst an optional macro ring has five controllable rings with 40 segments to enhance the most difficult of edges. A tracking profile light provides collimated light which moves with the camera for improved accuracy. Intuitive graphic controls and differentiated lighting for colour or mono mean the operator has complete flexibility and control over measurement functions.

Excel software is Windows' based and has been developed around the operator to be intuitive and user-friendly. Sophisticated electronics incorporate on-board memory, DSP technology and USB connection for reliability and speed.
