Zdobyslaw Goraj andJanusz SznajderInstitute of Aviation, Warsaw, Poland

are the recipients of the Journal's Outstanding Paper Award for Excellence for their paper

"Extreme loads acting on transport airplane following a sudden change in symmetric equilibrium"

which appeared in Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology: An International Journal , Vol. 74 No. 2, 2002

Professor Zdobyslaw Goraj is the aircraft designer and specialist in flight dynamics. His major topics of interest cover panel methods; stability and maneuverability of flying objects; high angle of attack aerodynamics, aircraft performances and flight safety. Very active on the international level – member of various consortiums under the 5 Framework of European Union. Regularly asked for reviews and opinions about submitted papers and international projects, both from Poland and from abroad. Wrote the monography entitled "Dynamics and Aerodynamics of Highly Maneuverable Aircraft Including some Computational Procedures" (472 pages). Initiator and main organiser of the International Seminars entitled: "Recent Research and Design Progress in Aeronautical Engineering and Its Influence on Education" (1994-2002). Member of Editorial Boards of a few aeronautical journals. Author of numerous papers (more than 100). Doctor Honoris Causa of Moscow State Aviation Institute, AIAA member; ICAS Programme Committee member.

Janusz Sznajder graduated from Warsaw University of Technology in 1993. In 1999 he obtained his PhD degree from WUT after the thesis: "Application of a Surface Singularity Method for the Analysis of Airplane's Stability in Lateral, Subcritical Flow" He is an engineer with experience in the field of aerodynamics and flight dynamics. His works include computing the flow around an aircraft by means of panel methods and Euler code, determination of aerodynamic characteristics, performance and stability. Now he is a coordinator and scientific leader of a research grant obtained from the Polish State Committee for Scientific Research and devoted to high angle aerodynamics. He participates also in the fifth Framework Programme of European Union and works on HELIX project. He is an author and co-author of several papers devoted to aircraft stability, dynamics and performance. Employed in the Institute of Aviation, Warsaw, Poland.
