Editorial

This year, Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology celebrates its 75th anniversary, and as part of this issue we include some specially selected material from the first ever issue of the journal.

First, Charles Keil shares his memories of the founding editor of the journal, Lieut-Col W. Lockwood Marsh. Lockwood Marsh conceived the journal and remained its editor for 32 years. We are also happy to be able to reproduce two articles taken from the first ever issue – printed in 1929 – of Aircraft Engineering. The first is an article by H. Bolas on new theories of tail flutter; the second is a piece looking at the efficiency of the autogyro.

The journal has developed beyond recognition since its conception, but still retains its focus and dedication “to the science and practice of aeronautics and to allied and subsidiary branches of the engineering industry”. The editorial team sincerely hope that you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed researching and compiling it.
