CMC Electronics achieves higher capability maturity rating for its software engineering

The long-term commitment of CMC Electronics Inc. to a software-focused, continuous improvement program was demonstrated recently when the company earned a “superior” rating using the US-based Software Engineering Institute's capability maturity model (CMM) as a reference. A formal CMM-based assessment of the software processes at CMC's Montreal and Ottawa facilities was completed by a team of independent experts, after which CMC Electronics was awarded a level 3 CMM rating.

CMC's Patrick Champagne, Vice President of Engineering and Continuous Improvement, said, “This achievement underscores the long- term commitment made by CMC Electronics to continuous improvement, to Six Sigma and to achieving world-class performance as a focused aerospace and defense electronics company.”

Champagne added, “To reach this level constitutes a major accomplishment, especially when considering that of 59 appraisals made in Canada over the past several years, only a few have attained a level 3 or higher. There are no separate statistics for Canada, but as a reference, the Software Engineering Institute's organisation maturity profile has compiled information on 712 U.S. companies of which 23 per cent have attained level 3; 5.5 per cent level 4 and 2.7 per cent level 5. We are very proud of our engineering, program management and support staff, who helped to make this most recent accomplishment a reality.”

CMC Electronics will continue to improve its engineering processes and utilise a similar model known as the CMMI for integrated product development and systems engineering processes. CMC plans to accelerate the rate at which its processes are improved, since this is an essential aspect of maintaining a competitive edge for its customers and partners.
