Norton, part of Saint-Gobain Abrasives, has launched NORaX, a three-dimensional coated abrasive product that claims higher performance in cut, finish and consistency due to its innovative multi-layer structure.

Unlike conventional mono-layer or aggregate, NORaX consists of a new breed of engineered abrasives which act like a grinding wheel on a cloth backing. Slow erosion of bond and grain is claimed to give a longer life, while performance is maintained as more sharp grains are exposed as the product is used.

According to Saint-Gobain Abrasives, NORaX cuts faster than other products, enabling manufacturing steps to be skipped and processes compressed. Rapid cutting also reduces user fatigue as less pressure is required to achieve the desired result. In controlled tests, NORaX was reportedly shown to remove double the amount of material after 2 min compared to conventional coated abrasives and aggregates.

Howard Prince, Product Manager at Norton, said: “In laboratory tests, NORaX has shown measurable benefits in a variety of applications. When polishing stainless steel, NORaX lasted five times longer, provided better finish and produced a lower cost per part figure than conventional P400 and non-woven alternatives. Cutting out steps in production is another feature of the new product that will be attractive to engineers.”

NORax is said to be ideal for a variety of industrial applications, including centreless polishing, manual or robotic polishing, stainless steel tanks and vessels, medical prosthesis, turbine blades and hand tool finishing.

NORax is a micron graded finishing product available in a grit range corresponding to FEPA P150 to P3000.
