The first of the new DXB generation of high specification electronic automatic surface grinding machines from Okamoto are now available in the UK through 600 Centre of Shepshed, Loughborough.

Available in two models, the 52 DXB and 63 DXB machine features Okamoto's own control development that incorporates digital readout for cross traverse and an electronic pulse generator to replace conventional manual cross-feed handle. Fully automatic cycles can also be initiated from the touch panel control.

Heavily ribbed Meehanite castings, produced at Okamoto's own factory, are used to create a rigid grinding platform to carry heavy duty “double-V” guideways for both longitudinal and cross feed axes. This combination of machine carcase and bearing ways enables ultra-fine grinding to be performed and the high orders of rigidity makes the machine especially suited to grinding hard materials.

Longitudinal and cross-axis travels on the 52 DXB are 650 by 230 mm, respectively with an electro-magnetic chuck size of 500 by 200 mm and 200 kg table capacity. On the 63 DXB travels are increased to 750 by 340 mm, chuck size is 600 by 300 mm and table load 420 kg. While the distance between wheel and table surface is 47.5 to 397.5 mm on the 52 DXB, this is 22.5 to 322 mm with a further maximum daylight increase to 522.5 mm available as an option.

Grinding wheel size in the smaller machine is 205 by 19 by 50.8 mm powered by 1.5 kW, 3,000 rpm motor and 355 mm or optional 400 mm diameter by 38 by 127 mm on the 63 DXB machine when the larger wheel is powered by a 1,500 rpm 3.7 kW motor with a further optional specification of 7.5 kW.

On both machines automatic downfeed, traverse and plunge cut can be set between 200 mm/min and the rapid feed rate of 1,000 mm/min. Up to five spark out settings are also available for setting size and surface finish requirements. For cross-feed rates, both machines are identical at zero to 1,000 mm/min and intermittent feeds are 0.5 to 12 mm on the 52 DXB and 0.5 to 20 mm on the 63 DXB.
