Developed for high speed batch and production grinding at 45m/s wheelspeed, the latest Multi-Task Toyoda GL4A-S11 angle head cylindrical grinding machine uses Toyoda STAT hydrostatic and hydrodynamic bearing technology for wheelhead and table slideways. Controlled by Fanuc 21/TB control with Toyoda developed “assistance” menu software, the machine specification includes a complete suite of canned cycles for setting, grinding, dressing and maintenance.

This machine is the production cylindrical grinder in the Toyoda range and is now available in the UK from the 600 Centre of Shepshed near Loughborough. It has a swing of 320mm with 630mm between centres which can accept a load of 150kg and grind parts up to 300mm diameter.

Central to its heritage and performance as a production machine is the heavily ribbed cast iron box-type construction which is designed so the working area is very close to the operating position for ease of loading and unloading. The slide-aside guarding gives excellent access with an opening of over 1,200mm and the swivel, high specification Fanuc 21/TB control provides an ideal ergonomic operation for setting and operation.

The high performance 45m/s wheelhead utilises STAT spindle bearing technology, a hybrid of hydrostatic and hydrodynamics giving higher stability, rigidity and durability than conventional bearings. The bearing is adjustment free, eliminates any flutter and provides excellent damping due to the pressurised oil film that ensures no metal to metal contact. The 308 angle approach 455 x 100 x 127mm wheel is powered by 7.5kW motor. The wheelhead has a 15m/min rapid traverse rate and minimum increment of 0.0001mm.

A live/dead spindle workhead with MT4 taper has a 21 to 500revs/min speed range with manual tailstock while the table has a 900mm working stroke, 108 swivel and a rapid feed rate of 15m/ min.

The grinding control system assist menu developed by Toyoda has a full range of canned operational cycles with set up guidance, dressing and wheel change prediction. Included in the specification is Marposs in-process gauging, size control and an automatic lateral locator. As options gap elimination and spline auto-sizing for diameters between 5 and 80mm can be specified as well as inverter wheel speed control.
