IAA takes control of international airspace

IAA takes control of international airspace

The IAA recently commenced full radar services in the Northern Oceanic Transition Area (NOTA), an area of almost 100,000km2 of airspace situated to the North-West of Ireland. Full radar services enables Shannon air traffic controllers to provide airlines more flexible and direct routings and also earlier transitions to their optimum cruising levels, all with economic benefits and cost savings. The provision of radar services in this portion of airspace is indicative of the commitment of the IAA to providing efficient and cost effective service improvements to its airline customers and has the full support of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the representative association for airlines.

This marks a major milestone in North Atlantic aviation history. NOTA consolidates Irish controlled airspace as a key strategic gateway for over 90 per cent of air traffic between Europe and North America. Ireland now controls a total airspace block of 450,000km2, at the interface between the European and North Atlantic airspace areas.
