A Miyano BNJ-42SY handles increasing aerospace orders

Precision turning specialist APT Leicester has purchased a Miyano BNJ-42SY fixed head turning centre to handle an increasing volume of orders for close tolerance aerospace industry components.

As well as providing additional high speed turning, this latest machine is around 20 per cent more efficient than the one it replaces. The BNJ-42SY features a back-working turret and a sub-spindle with C-axis that significantly speeds up the cutting process on the right side of the operation. The 12-station main turret equipped with a Y-axis capability, allows simultaneous front-and-back processing operations, simplifying workflow and reducing overall costs.

The BNJ 42-SY is said to be suitable for components up to 42mm diameter and is operated in conjunction with an automated IEMCA short bar feeder, reflecting the equipment's primary use on stainless steel, high temperature alloys or titanium based components. A polygon turning attachment enables shapes with equal sides such as squares, hexagons, to be accurately machined. As with all APT production machines, it is fully equipped for unattended or “lights-out” operation.

This £130,000 investment brings APT's complement of Miyano equipment up to seven fixed head lathes and two drill/tap machining centres. The company also operates nine Star sliding head lathes – enabling it to offer one of the most comprehensive and cost- effective services for precision turned parts in the country.

“It is the fourth Miyano BNJ-42 we have purchased in the past three years,” says Managing Director David Bailey. “Featuring high metal removal rates combined with extreme accuracy and versatility, the machines are ideal for our requirements. They also complement the capabilities of our other manufacturing equipment, allowing us to produce in a single cycle, the kinds of parts that most other suppliers require secondary machine operations to complete.”

With a 50-year track record, APT Leicester Ltd is a leading supplier of high precision turned components from 1 to 42mm and intricate prismatic parts to industries such as aerospace, medical equipment, motor sport and lock making. Continuous investment in high capability Miyano and Star CNC multi-axis turning and drill/tap machining centres enables the company to offer one of the most comprehensive and cost-effective precision turning services in the UK (Figure 20).
