Can aircraft take off at shorter intervals? NLR recently conducted a study assessing the possibilities to do so safely. The study “Risk-Based Decision Support for New Air Traffic Operations with Reduced Aircraft Separation” shows that smaller separation distances between aircraft is one means of increasing airport capacity. However, for reasons of safety, wake vortices must be taken into account. New systems aboard aircraft and in the control tower can now better predict the location of these vortices.
