Double-edged grooving system

Article Type: Equipment and software From: Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology: An International Journal, Volume 80, Issue 4

Tooling giant Walter GB of Bromsgrove has added a special cut-off system based on 16 mm long double-edged grooving inserts and with PVD Tiger coatings, if required, to its GX16 parting off monoblock toolholder range.

Designed especially for the production of small parts on Swiss-type machines the new development is, however, equally applicable to parting-off applications on standard lathes.

With a cutting tool holder in monoblock design having a permanently integrated screw clamp, the locking screw has a 20° incline in both radial and axial directions for easy insert changeover. Accessibility is the major benefit when utilising these toolholders.

Available in grooving widths of 2, 2.5 and 3 mm, two insert variants are available both with very sharp cutting edges: CF4 precision sintered; and CF6 peripheral ground.

Offered also with PVD Tiger grade designations WSP43 and WSM33 – specifically developed for the wide range of cutting speeds encountered when machining to centre, and which regularly produce productivity increases of up to 100 per cent due to their improved process reliability courtesy of a high resistance to flank wear, cratering and thermal cracking – the new cut-off system is believed to be ideal for machining all types of steel, and alloys including difficult-to-machine materials.
