DuraMax scanning measuring machine

Article Type: Equipment and software From: Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology: An International Journal, Volume 80, Issue 4

Carl Zeiss recently introduced DuraMax CONTROL 2008, a new extraordinary, compact, 3D coordinate measuring machine (CMM). The scanning measuring machine featuring the VAST®XXT sensor is believed to be an ideal replacement for all types of gauges. It can be used in any size workshop or inline process control. With DuraMax, Carl Zeiss is responding to customer demands for CNC scanning measuring technology with a small machine as close to production processes as possible (Figure 2).

DuraMax is said to be suited for process control on the production floor, for the quick in-between inspection of small workpieces and for testing volume parts directly in production. It reportedly replaces traditional measuring equipment such as height gauges, ring gauges, snap gauges, plug gauges, form measuring machines, workshop measuring equipment and manual measuring machines.

Meeting the needs of users of dimensional measuring technology in many aspects: its low-total price offers customers affordable access to ZEISS scanning. Users can quickly learn how to operate the machine and perform measurements. The ease of use makes this “Scanning machine for everyone” an ideal replacement tool. If modifications are made to the product to be tested, standard inspection procedures often require new, expensive gauges. DuraMax, however, is a CNC all-rounder that, when combined with CAD-based CALYPSO measuring software, quickly, easily and reproducibly measures all changes.

According to Carl Zeiss, as a tabletop CMM or with an optional base that can be ideally loaded from four sides, DuraMax offers an entirely new concept and stands out as a result of an extremely modern and attractive design.

Scanning is not only a standard feature of DuraMax, but it also offers single-point probing. The VAST XXT scanning sensor scans with high speed. It is known for precision measurements and provides dimensional information on the part features. DuraMax is extremely powerful when combined with CALYPSO software, the standard software for all ZEISS CMM.

DuraMax, the name stands for its durability and robustness, withstands rough environments and demonstrates its high stability over a broad temperature range. At a temperature range claimed of 18-30°C, DuraMax exceeds current expectations. The MPE values range from 2.4 + L/300 μm at 18-22°C and 2.9 + L/200 μm at 18-30°C. These are pioneering features in this class.

While measuring, the passive vibration damping offers protection against mechanical vibrations from production. Glass ceramic length measuring systems for the three axes and axes protected with bellows, precise linear guideways and rigid, limited drives ensure precise measuring even under poor environmental conditions. The measuring volume (500×500×500 mm) is very large for a measuring machine in this class. The installation dimensions, however, are surprisingly small.

An additional benefit claimed is the compact design of DuraMax. If needed, it can be quickly moved to a different location within the facility – only a forklift is needed. Once connected to a power source it is immediately ready for action. This is possible because pressurised air is not required.

The key features of DuraMax are stated to be its suitability for a rough production environment, the high permissible temperature variations, the proven and pioneering ZEISS scanning methods, the minimal space requirements and the attractive price. Plug and scan was implemented into a convincing machine concept in accordance with customer wishes.
