Quick and error-free tool setting

Article Type: Equipment and software From: Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology: An International Journal, Volume 81, Issue 1

Combining the flexibility and accuracy of (CMOS) camera-based automatic electronic edge detection of a cutting tool with intelligent image processing and the option of wireless transfer of tool setting data to the machine tool control, enables the latest V10210MVIII universal vertical presetting and measuring centre from DMG to provide quick and error-free tool setting.

In addition, the presetter can be used as a stand alone unit or be fully integrated within DMG’s Tool Manager system for logging, pre-ordering, allocation and recording of tool information in order to optimise off-line support to the metal cutting operation.

Available through DMG (UK) of Luton, the V10210MVIII presetter has the capacity to handle larger tool assemblies up to 420 mm diameter by 465 mm overall length which can be specified as 700 mm as an option and underlines the quality of build around its cast iron platform. This construction maximises the unit’s rigidity to eliminate any error created from torsional forces. Measuring scales to provide accurate positioning are from Heidenhain.

Being set upon a tool cabinet, with 17 in. TFT colour screen creates a large and clear cutting edge definition with up to 30× magnification possible. Meanwhile, through the Microvision III image processor, two measuring systems are available to the user giving the selectable option of fixed or “flying” cross-hairs.

As an option, a touch screen can be provided as well as software to interface with reading/writing chips used in tool identification systems, and post processors are available for all current machine tool control systems.

The new machine expands the DMG range of tool set-up and measuring equipment that includes the Prima for tools up to 550 mm diameter by 1,000 mm long and CMC operated with Microvision IV. The Uno 115 is an introductory level presetter for tools up to 230 mm diameter and the Viva Universal Toolpresetter has been developed especially for lathes and multi-spindle machines. DMG is also able to provide a series of Microvision image processing systems to suit user requirements.
