Safety management and flight data monitoring package

Article Type: Equipment and software From: Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology: An International Journal, Volume 81, Issue 4

Baldwin Aviation, which developed SMSplus, a web-based safety management and monitoring program for fixed wing and helicopter flight organizations, and CAP Aviation Consulting Group (CAPACG), providers of flight data monitoring (FDM), have combined their expertise to offer the “Power of Plus,” a complete safety management and FDM package. Don Baldwin, President of Baldwin Aviation and the former Head of both the Texaco and Coca Cola flight departments, announced the exclusive new safety and efficiency package at Heli-Expo in Anaheim, California.

“We’re very pleased to collaborate with CAPACG to provide the most comprehensive solution for improving both safety and efficiency available in business and general aviation, charter and special missions operations. Our SMSplus is an on-line, turnkey program that focuses on human factors and procedures and helps flight departments develop a specific Safety Management program that’s tailored to their specific needs. CAPACG provides a complimentary service that concentrates on collecting, managing and analyzing flight data. Both of our organizations recognize the importance of developing a strong safety culture and the efficiencies and cost-savings that result from utilizing effective tools to monitor routine operations, maintenance and training, too, so working together to address both the subjective and the objective elements of a flight organization made perfect sense to us.

CAPACG has created its FDMplus program to dovetail with our SMSplus and create an equation that adds up to a powerful tool for flight departments,” Baldwin explained.

Baldwin Aviation has adapted SMSplus from its comprehensive Safety Management Program, which was originally developed in 2005 to simplify compliance to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), International Civil Aviation Organization and IS-BAO regulations, standards, and best practices. Created in collaboration with key insurance industry leaders and experienced operators and flight organization veterans, the Baldwin Aviation Safety Management Program provides subscribers with all of the components and expertise necessary to become IS-BAO registered or HAI Platinum compliant in just 4 and 5 months.

CAPACG, which was incorporated in 2004 to bridge the gap between commercial, military and general aviation, has built a solid reputation on its Continual Auditing Programs that are designed to ensure Continual Aviation Proficiency. It provides third-party IS-BAO audits to assist flight organizations in obtaining a Certificate of Registration from the International Business Aviation Council Standards Board. Its FDMplus program monitors pilot performance by measuring adherence to Standard Operating Procedures and aircraft limitations. It utilizes CAPACG’s FDM … The Silent MentorÆ risk management tool to help operators identify threats and mitigate risks through flight data analysis. FDMplus provides timely feedback that is extremely valuable in showing flight organization personnel how to improve maintenance, operations, training and safety.

“By combining SMSplus and FDMplus, flight organizations will improve the overall efficiency and safety level of their flight operations while reducing fuel consumption, maintenance and insurance costs. These programs have the effect of adding exceptional expertise to an organization while reducing the overall expense of operations and insurance. The ‘plus’ in this equation really shows up on the bottom line,” Baldwin noted. As with SMSplus, FDMplus data will be delivered through Baldwin Aviation’s client secure web site portals.
