Multi-function data gateway device will support CPDLC and FANS messaging

Article Type: Equipment and software From: Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology: An International Journal, Volume 81, Issue 4

International Communications Group (ICG) has added a low-cost “Data-Only” transceiver to its list of Iridium communications products. The ICG Datalink-100 (DL-100) is an Iridium SDU that provides bi-directional messaging for ATS and AOC traffic over the global Iridium Satellite Network via a Short Burst Data (SBD) modem. The DL-100 is compliant with the ARINC 761 requirements for aircraft Datalink services. When connected to an aircraft’s communications management unit (DMU/CMU) via conventional ARINC 429 circuits, it can be used to send and receive traditional Aircraft Communications and Reporting System messages. It can also support newer Controller Pilot Datalink Communications as required for Link 2000 operations as well as Future Air Navigation System (FANS1/A) messaging requirements.

“The DL-100 reportedly, not only expands an aircraft’s communications capabilities by providing a reliable and global satellite service, it provides 100 per cent communications access as required by the ATNS providers before being permitted to fly reduced separation minimums and alternate routes,” noted Armin Jabs, Chief Operating Officer for ICG. “The DL-100 can either replace or serve as a backup to the aircraft’s High Frequency Datalink system or be used as a primary Datalink transceiver or restoration device in the event of an alternate system failure. This not only adds convenience but an extra measure of safety to the aircraft operation and is a direct response to customer input regarding redundancy of systems,” he added. Also, for the Regional Jet aircraft, where previous data communications systems were either too costly or cumbersome to install, the economical DL-100 provides an avenue for regional jets to take advantage of the benefits offered by Datalink services. An optional version of the DL-100 with an internal Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver is available. The GPS version provides automatic or event driven position reporting in support of asset tracking requirements or classical Automatic Flight Following.

The ICG Datalink-100 provides multiple types of connectivity to include: Ethernet, USB, serial, ARINC 429, etc. that allows access for a variety of peripheral devices. It can be easily configured for specific applications or to transmit periodic data packets. It is small, compact and lightweight and can be installed on any size of aircraft, Jabs pointed out.
