An Appreciation by John H. Barnes

In 1997, the Association of Aerospace Universities (AAU) was formed by myself and six other people: Alan Jocelyn (Chairman), Mike West (Treasurer), Mike Jacobs (Vice Chairman), David Philpott, and David Wade (Publicity).

This management committee set up the fist AAU stand at The Farnborough Airshow in September 1998. The AAU web site shows a picture of this stand with Mike West, myself, Terry Savage, and Ron Johnson (Figure 1). This picture was taken by Colin Haywood who was a colleague of Ron Johnson, both of whom were Chief Technicians at Coventry University.

I fully remember Terry introducing himself to us early on the opening day. He was proudly wearing his Press Badge and his winning manner soon resulted in an invitation to join us for much of the week.

Terry was working as the Editor of Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology (AEAT) published by Emerald Group Publishing Ltd Before the Second World War, the journal had been the organ of the Royal Aeronautical Society and Terry was determined to keep it in the forefront of technical expertise and wide-reaching information.

He was also keen to obtain papers from all types of sources as can be seen from the many papers from overseas authors. His offer to become the press arm of the AAU was quickly accepted with the result of several papers being published albeit not much of late except a paper four years ago on the need for the UK to develop existing airports rather than new ones and my concluding report as Founding President of the AAU in 2008 (Barnes, 2008).

In these initial years, the section “News from the AAU” reported on many valuable technical events in the form of visits and conferences. At the AAU launch, Terry made a brilliant video which featuring a 120-plus dinner of high fliers on the S.S. Great Britain, where the principal guest was Richard Noble. Much of the excellent organization was done by Alan Jocelyn with the help of the management team and Ann Jacobs and Liz West who all loved Terry’s friendly nature and enthusiasm.

The first paper on the UK’s support for its aircraft industry was edited by Terry and John Farley (Barnes, 1999). This set the scene in respect of a need for and the role of the AAU – as perceived by myself way back to 1990!

I was pleased to join the Editorial Board of the AEAT, also acting as a Technical Editor to assess the winning papers for the Emerald Literati Awards, then being presented annually at a special awards banquet held in London. By participating in the Literati Awards, Terry ensured that the journal maintained a good submission of high-quality papers, including AAU-related ones such as that by Farley (1999).

Terry had a wide social background which included the Polish Airmen’s Club which met in Kensington and the Spitfire Pub in Hammersmith. I remember dining on pigs’ knuckles at least twice, one time with Mike West. The hospitality was superb.

He was a long-time member of the Covent Garden Old Tyme Music Hall and I well remember attending these, once with my twin brother who could see what a character Terry was, even being “Dickensian” to some degree.

Being a bachelor, Terry lived with his sister and it was always nice to talk with her before Terry was called from his room. I send her and all his friends the best wishes of all AAU members in this sad loss.
