Asian Libraries 1998 Library Web Site competition

The Editors of Asian Libraries are pleased to announce the inauguration of a new annual competition for the best library Web site in Asia and the Pacific. Any library in the Asian Libraries region may enter.

A library Web site is a set of "pages" accessible on the World Wide Web which provides all or some of the following: information about the library for its customers and its own staff (e.g. opening hours, a staff directory with e-mail addresses, membership rules); in-house publications; access to information resources such as the library OPAC and selected Internet resources (e.g. e-journals, subject guides to selected Internet resources appropriate to the information needs of the library's customers).

The judging panel will be chaired by Philip Calvert (Victoria University of Wellington), with Lawrence Tam (University of Hong Kong) and Dr Neela Jagannathan (Indira Gandhi National Open University) serving as the other two judges for 1998. The judges will assess the site in terms of its concept, technology and technique, and specifically:

  • overall aesthetic appeal and design features;

  • clarity of purpose of the site as a whole and each separate part of the Web site;

  • quality of writing and of information conveyed;

  • ease-of-use and navigability of the site as a whole;

  • functionality of site features (are they useful or just window dressing?);

  • currency of the information and site maintenance.

The winning entry will receive an appropriate certificate of achievement from MCB University Press/Asian Libraries, extensive coverage of the site in the journal, and a year's online subscription to any one of the library and information science journals published by MCB.

To enter send the URL of your library's Web site to Philip Calvert, Associate Editor of Asian Libraries, at philip.calvert@vuw.ac.nz. Include the following details: your name, the name of the library, plus brief details of the Web site and any features you want the judges to note. Please add information about any unusual software requirements of the site.

Closing date: 30 June 1998. The winning Library Web Site will be announced in August 1998.

The 1996 Library Web Site competition of the New Zealand Library and Information Association was won by the entry from the H. B. Williams Library in Gisborne. If you need some inspiration then take a look at this Library's site at http://bpc.co.nz/library/.
