With this volume, the British Food Journal enters its 104th year of publication. As ever we will be bringing you a wide range of articles covering every aspect of the food industry, from production processes to marketing and consumer attitudes.

The meat industry is often in the news these days. The outbreaks of livestock-related diseases have resulted in tighter EC legislation and also the need to reassure consumers of the integrity of the product. This issue opens with a couple of articles which address some of these concerns.

The first looks at meat tracking systems and proposes a prototype system which would create a fully traceable meat supply chain. This leads us to an article outlining one local authority's experience of enforcing the new butchers' licensing regulations. What is the cost of improving food safety standards? Is existing legislation sufficient? We then look at consumer attitudes to two dairy technologies.

Further articles in this issue explore the market potential for organic foods in Europe and health education regarding diet and smoking.
