Director and choreographer Debbie Allen led a campaign to raise $900,000 to rebuild the collections of branches of the Los Angeles Public Library in South Central LA. The Juniper Serra branch, which was damaged in the 1987 earthquake, also lost its temporary replacement facility, which was burned during the 1992 riots. The funds will be used to buy books and materials for the new library and also for the John Muir Library, which reopened in 1997.

In Indiana, a bond project of $12.5 million will be used to construct five new branches of the Indianapolis Marion County Library System and enlarge four other branches. Construction has just begun of a new 20,000-square-foot branch. The $1.8 million facility replaces the Wanamaker Library, which has been in use since 1969.
