In a similar vein, the impoverished city of East St Louis, Illinois, has opened its new, $4.3 million public library. The 18,000-square-foot library, with 66,000 books, is the first public building constructed in East St Louis in many years, according to the St Louis Post-Dispatch. The city's old library had been housed in an 87-year-old building originally constructed as an Elks Lodge. http://www.libraryjournal.com/articles/news/thisweek/20010129_17419.asp
