The cost of providing library services of any kind is a more general example of the cost of access to information. Fortunately, the news is very promising for some communities. The San Diego Public Library is receiving $5 million of a larger $80 million gift to the San Diego Foundation. The money will be applied to the construction of a new Point Loma branch, which is scheduled to open in 2002. The new building will be 26,000 square feet, which is roughly five times the size of the existing building, and will have three public conference rooms, two seminar rooms, and seating for 240. The total project will cost $8 million, and local authorities and the community will supply the remainder of the funding. The building is scheduled to open in 2002. In addition, San Diego PL is also planning to expand and renovate its La Jolla branch. http://www.libraryjournal.com/articles/news/thisweek/20010129_17420.asp
