Mayor Ron Gonzales of San Jose, California, has announced the groundbreakings for three new library branches and the relocation of another. The groundbreakings are the kickoff for a $440 million project for libraries and parks. The plan is to build six new branches and to double the size of another 14, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Construction is slated for 2002. In November 2000, voters had approved a bond measure 3:1 to bolster San Jose library and park systems, with $211.8 million as the library's share. Improvements for most of the system's branches include computer connections and community rooms. The project is the first library branch construction for San Jose neighborhoods in more than 20 years. http://www.ala.org/alonline/news/2001/010205.html#sanjose
