Fund-raising

I am pleased to be asked to write a piece on library fund-raising issues for The Bottom Line: Managing Library Finances. My own article earlier in this journal focused on the Academic Library and Advancement and Development Network (ALADN), and how it serves the growing profession of library development. Since diversity of approach is a strength in library development, it seems important for this new column on fund-raising to have more than one voice. Thus, I chose to invite several of my ALADN colleagues to share this space with me over the coming year. The first of my collaborators, Irene Hoffman, is a professional librarian who has more than 20 years of experience at OCLC and in a university library setting at the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, where she was a faculty member, assistant to the dean, and library advancement director. She is a founder of ALADN, indeed, she won the contest in 1996 that coined the group's name. Irene is well-known in the academic library development world and has helped plan and implement every ALADN conference since the beginning.

Subsequent fund-raising columns will also focus on issues directly related to achieving success in library fund-raising. The winter issue will have a column by John Wilson, Library Development Director from Baylor University in Waco, Texas and co-host of the ALADN 2002 Conference, on the value and uses of development publications.

Finally, I would like to encourage all readers of this journal who have any responsibility for fund-raising to participate in ALADN's activities. Our goal is to help each other succeed. We welcome new members who can bring fresh perspectives to our mutual challenges and opportunities. We look forward to hearing from you!
