Upcoming workshops

You are no doubt making your plans for the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago. Among the many programs and preconferences you might want to attend are the following programs, which are presented by the Library and Administration Association (LAMA) and are likely to interest readers of The Bottom Line.

Risk Analysis for LibrariesSaturday, June 26, 8.00-10.00 amRisk analysis is required to minimize the impact of both monetary and social costs. This analysis will include personnel, building, and security. Risk analysis establishes a good security posture, and risk management maintains it. You might want to also consider the program that follows at 10.30, Raise High the Roof Beams: Building a Library Security Framework.

A Gift Is More Than Just a Gift: Managing In-Kind GiftsMonday, June 28, 10.30 am-noonA keynote speaker will give a 30-minute overview of in-kind gifts. Following the presentation, various library and development staff will lead roundtable discussions on IRS rules, policies, appraisals, acceptance of gifts, and stewardship.

On June 27–28, LAMA is also presenting a regional workshop in Chicago, Successful Fundraising for Libraries: What Works Now? The two-day workshop will explain how to research the best funding sources; how to build strong relationships for the library with grant makers; and how to develop dependable, renewable, internally controlled income streams from local residents. Here is the information that librarians, volunteers, and trustees need to “make the case” for the library and convince the community to support its needs with memberships, donations, major gifts, grants, and sponsorships. Registration is through the ALA Annual Conference web site, at www.ala.org/annual, and because this is a regional conference, it does not require conference registration.

Introduction to Planned GivingMonday, June 28, 1.30-3.30 pmThis session will address fundamental questions of planned giving: What are planned gifts? How do you get them? What do they mean to the future of your library? A planned-giving program, including annuities, bequests, and endowments, should be a cornerstone of any successful development effort. An estimated $14 trillion will be donated in the next 20 years, and this program will explain what you can do to receive a share.
