Coming up in professional development

Coming up in professional development

ACRL/Harvard Leadership Institute for Academic LibrariansCambridge, Massachusetts, August 5-10, 2007

What is the institute? The Harvard Institutes for Higher Education is collaborating with the Association for College and Research Libraries (ACRL) to present the Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians to help librarians meet the many challenges of today’s libraries. Because the demands for new services frequently outstrip the available resources – money, time, and people – librarians must become more effective in making their voices heard as priorities are set campus-wide. And living up to the constant expectation that they will provide articulate, effective leadership too often creates stress in both their personal and professional lives.

The goal of this program is to increase your capacity to lead and to manage and to help you answer two key questions:

  1. 1.

How well-positioned is my organization to meet current and future challenges?

  2. 2.

How effective is my own leadership?

Who should attend? The institute is limited to those with significant administrative responsibility in an institution of higher education, and who show high promise for making a significant contribution in the future, such as library directors, university librarians, and their associates and direct reports.

What does the institute cost? The comprehensive program fee of $1,975 for ACRL members ($2,100 for nonmembers) covers tuition, all program and instructional materials, refreshment breaks, lunch daily, an opening reception, and social events during the week. Participants are expected to have the endorsement of their institutions (ordinarily, this is reflected in full financial support).

Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. This institute is expected to fill quickly, so early registration is recommended.

Curriculum and how to register: check ACRL’s institute website at www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlevents/leadershipinstitute.htm for the complete curriculum and faculty and for information on registration.
