A book for the manager‐as‐communicator. The authors have produced a comprehensive discussion of the range of communication task activities through which managers attempt to manage. They achieve a substantial handbook of techniques and methods, based on a wealth of scholarship and consulting experience. As such, the book is readable and offers much practical theory and advice.

This is an attempt at producing a definitive guide to communicating in business, and as such will appeal mostly to managers, trainers, and their clients and colleagues. I am less convinced that scholars and researchers will find much new here, although there are extensive references to valuable literature. Lecturers and students of skills‐oriented courses may well wish to use the book as a supplementary text, and indeed some of the end‐of‐chapter exercises may well prove popular for in‐house personal development programmes. This is a training resource, and seems to offer a well‐rounded, if somewhat conventional, package.

One question begs an answer. Why is this book so expensive? Readers will readily recognise value in the content and structure of this book, but will they pay £45.00? Surely it should appeal to managers and students of communication and business and management. But how many will be put off by the price? It does have a nice dust cover!Roll‐on the softback edition.
