Four states face court over recognition of qualifications

The European Commission has decided to take Austria, Greece, Portugal and Finland to court over the recognition of qualifications.

The Commission believes that Austrian rules governing the appointment of health-service doctors favour candidates living locally. Austria also lays down that the posts of medical-laboratory technician, radiology technician and orthoptist are open only to people already in paid employment.

The Commission is challenging Greek rules that stipulate that each optician may operate only one shop.

Moreover, Greece, Portugal and Finland have failed to inform the Commission how they have transposed into national law the EU directive on recognising the professional qualifications of electricians, tilers, hairdressers and other trades people.
